THE EQUS GOLF STORY - CHAPTER 7 – TRADEMARK

August 05, 2016

Competing with the “big boys” was going to require hard work, intense research, intellectual savvy and a lot of luck. With EQUS Golf the intellectual savvy was more of a team game and Glenn Bacal was definitely a starter. As an expert in intellectual property and trademark law, his knowledge and services were invaluable.

I met Glenn in the Fall of 2010 and have since found his expertise and true interest in my undertaking as one of the main reasons he routinely receives national and regional recognition for his work. Perhaps Columbia, Oxford and Cal Berkeley had something to do with it as his genuine care and professionalism always seemed to deliver results.

The first step in obtaining a trademark is a search, both preliminary and comprehensive to determine if the proposed mark is available. This can be a very frustrating process as most words in the dictionary have been used at one time or another. The solution, make up words. I’d played this game before. We made up ours and our imagination prevailed.

The application process took about nine months. During this time, a Trademark Office attorney reviewed the application, published it for opposition then we waited to see if others challenged it. On June 23, 2012 we received our first trademark for “LRDC”.

Trademarks come in all sizes, shapes and colors, literally! You can trademark words, designs, colors, shapes, sounds, scents, touch and motion. They signify your brand, your reputation. They are who you are and what you stand for and best of all, they last forever!

“The strength or force gained by motion or by a series of events.”

Regaining momentum after a nine month hiatus was difficult at best. To break the boredom and monotony of the standard micro-management, of a newly acquired heart, was a challenge. Momentum is a fleeting force. We had it, we lost it and just like that the outcome to our iron development project was in jeopardy.

The coordination of the events to make my transplant happen was extraordinary. I was one of several recipients from our donor who were each simultaneously prepped for surgery in up to eight different locations. Heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas and intestines could each potentially save a life.

THE EQUS GOLF STORY - CHAPTER 17 – ANTICIPATION

October 18, 2016

Friends and family provided all we needed: initial housing, meals and a lot of support. The wait was on (again) however, for whatever reason my odds were much better. Be it more experience, an abundance of confidence or simply more organs per recipient, the St. Lukes Cardiac Transplant team in Kansas City was the perfect fit.
